Grade Level: 6-8, 9-12

This mini lesson focuses on Landsat satellite data and how it is used to detect changes in land use. Students will answer questions based off of a NASA Video that features how Landsat data are interpreted in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, and gives examples of the effects insects and logging have with land management.



Grade Level: 6-8

Students watch a video explaining albedo and its impact on Earth. The video shows visualizations of albedo across Earth and how it can change. Students will interpret the images in the video and answer questions about albedo.



Grade Level: 9-12

Students will engage in a ā€œZoom In Inquiryā€ learning routine to understand the symbols on a world map that shows population-weighted concentrations of PM2.5. They will reflect on how their perception of the image changed as they saw more of the image.

Students will engage in a ā€œZoom In Inquiryā€ learning routine to understand a world map that shows changes in PM2.5-attributable mortality per 100,000 population (Bondie, 2013).

Students will synthesize information from maps that show population, concentrations of PM2.5, and PM2.5-attributable mortality across the globe in order to draw conclusions about the relationship between particulate pollution and human health. 


Grade Level: 6-8

Students visit a NASA Website called "Eyes on the Earth" to view satellite missions in 3D circling the Earth and learn to navigate to specific satellites to learn about their capability of analyzing our changing planet and air quality.
