The world's ocean is heated at the surface by the Sun. This heating is uneven for many reasons. These reasons include Earth's rotation, revolution around the sun, and tilt. In addition, wind-driven ocean surface currents can cause uneven heating. This animation shows the long-term average sea surface temperature. Red and yellow show warmer waters and blue shows colder waters.
