Featured Phenomenon: Sea Level Change

Featured Phenomenon: Sea Level Change

Purpose

In some parts of the world sea levels are increasing, while decreasing in others, and even remain relatively flat in a few places; for more than 20 years, NASA has been tracking the global surface topography of the ocean to understand the important role it plays in our daily lives.

Why is this important? Climate change is causing our ocean to warm and glaciers to melt, resulting in sea level rise. Additionally, ocean temperatures are increasing, leading to ocean expansion. As ice sheets and glaciers melt, they add more water. For more than 20 years, NASA has been tracking the global surface topography of the ocean to understand the important role it plays in our daily lives.

My NASA Data provides you with a variety of resources, helping you to uncover this phenomenon with your students.
