The Scoop on Soils: Elementary GLOBE Storybook

The Scoop on Soils

In this storybook, the GLOBE kids are on the trail of Scoop, an eager dog who loves to dig holes in the soil (pedosphere). At each hole, Scoop has dug, the kids use their journals to record characteristics of the soil. GLOBE learning activities help students explore and describe soil, consider what is found in the soil such as rocks, roots, critters, and organic material, and explain the importance of soil to plants and animals.

The Scoop on Soils

Learning Activities:

Getting to Know SoilGetting to Know Soil
Overview: Each student will make predictions about the properties of various soil samples. Then they will examine several types of soils and record their observations. Next, they will learn about soil profiles and horizons by both examining a soil sample in a jar and by creating a soil profile flip chart.

Student Outcome: After completing this activity, students will know about soil’s different properties and about soil profiles. Students will know that soils have different properties including texture, color, and size. They will know that soil forms layers based on these properties.

Overview: Students time the flow of water through different soils and observe the amount of water held in these soils. They will also observe the filtering ability of soils by noting the clarity of the water before and after it passes through the soil.

Student Outcomes: Students will be able to identify the physical and chemical changes that occur as water passes through the soil.

Overview: Students will time the flow of water through soils with different properties and measure the amount of water held in these soils. They will also experiment with the filtering ability of soils by testing the pH of the water before and after it passes through the soil and observing changes to the clarity of the water and to the characteristics of the soil.

Student Outcomes:
Students will be able to identify the physical and chemical changes that occur as water passes through the soil. Students will be able to design experiments that test soil and water properties. Students will be able to explore the concept of Earth as a system. Students will be able to apply the ScientificMethod.
