Soil is the great integrator storing and affecting the chemistry of water, storing and releasing heat at Earth’s surface, retaining the effects of past climate and other forces of soil formation, while providing the medium for virtually all plant growth on land. Soil moisture and temperature can change rapidly while soil characteristics typically persist for a century or longer. The soil measurements collected by GLOBE cover the full range of properties. Students and scientists investigate the pedosphere – the global layers of soil – through collection of data that are generally unavailable from any other sources and address the significant local variations in soils. The training slides in this section will introduce you to the investigation of soil and the measurement protocols that enable you to contribute to it through the GLOBE Program. Pedosphere Protocol eTraining Modules

Soil Temperature
In this protocol you will learn the procedure to use when you measure the near-surface soil temperature using a soil thermometer. You’ll see how to calibrate your soil thermometer and conduct the measurements and report your data to GLOBE. Using the GLOBE Visualization System, you will learn how to display data on the map interface and access data for analysis. (Soil Temperature Protocol)

SMAP Soil Moisture
This slide set provides training in how to conduct the SMAP Soil Moisture Protocol. By following this protocol and reporting observation data to GLOBE, you, students, and others can contribute important data on near-surface soil moisture for validation of observations from NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite and extension of these observations into urban, coastal, and mountainous areas. The technique of weighing, drying, and reweighing soil samples to determine their water content is often referred to as the “gold standard” for soil moisture measurement. Gravimetric Soil Moisture 
Learn how to collect soil samples from the field, then determine the soil water content by calculating the difference between the wet sample mass and the dry sample mass. You will be able to relate soil moisture measurement to the physical and chemical properties of the soil. You’ll review how to report data to the GLOBE website and visualize data using the GLOBE Visualization System. (Gravimetric Soil Moisture Protocol)

Soil Characterization
Learn how to describe your soil profile by using soil characterization techniques. You will learn how to identify soil horizons and describe the following properties: soil structure, color, consistence, texture, and estimate root, rock, and carbonate concentrations. After completing this module, you'll know how to explain why the characterization of soil profiles is important data for GLOBE investigations and our understanding of the changing Earth system. You will know how to expose a soil profile in the field, upload data to the GLOBE database; and visualize data using GLOBE’s Visualization System. The Selecting, Exposing and Defining a Soil Characterization Site module is also required to be certified in the Soil Characterization protocol. (Soil Characterization Protocol)

Selecting, Exposing and Defining a Soil Characterization Site
Learn how to select, expose and define a Soil Characterization protocol study site, and get a step by step introduction of the protocol. After completing this module, you'll know how to explain why the characterization of soil profiles is important data for GLOBE investigations and our understanding of the changing Earth system. You will know how to expose a soil profile in the field, upload data to the GLOBE database; and visualize data using GLOBE’s Visualization Site.

Soil Bulk Density
In this module you will learn how to measure the bulk density- or how tightly packed the soil is- of each horizon in a soil profile. You will see how to collect samples in the field and then return to the lab to measure the wet and dry mass of the sample to determine dry mass and water content. Using these measurements, you will see how bulk density is calculated for each sample using these values. Finally, you will see how to report your data to GLOBE and visualize data using the GLOBE visualization system. (Soil Bulk Density Protocol)

Soil Infiltration
Learn how to determine the rate at which water soaks into the ground as a function of time. You will see how to build your own soil infiltrometer using coffee-sized cans and see how the rate of infiltration changes with time as soil pore spaces fill with water.
