*MY NASA DATA E-note (Number 28) November 2008 Greetings MY NASA DATA Alumni and Newslist members!* /The monthly E-note is sent to anyone who is interested in learning more about or keeping up to date with the MY NASA DATA project. If you know someone who is interested in this information, the sign-up can be found at: http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/HPDOCS/email_registration.html / *1) New lessons added to Teacher Plans collection 2) New Search Tool on Lessons Page 3) New data 4) NSTA in Portland, OR 5) New Science Project Ideas!* *1) New lessons added to Teacher Plans collection* Five new lessons from the 2008 workshop group and related outreach projects are available on the website on the Teacher Plans page http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov/User_lessons.html: Lesson #61 “Cold, Clouds, and Snowflakes” contributed by Mary Stander, Princeton, IL Lesson #62 “Is Grandpa Right, Were Winters Colder When He Was A Boy?” contributed by Rita Crocker, Holden, Missouri Lesson #63 Comparing the Effects of El Nino and La Nina contributed by Marti Phipps, California, and Kathy Rome, Kansas Lesson #64 Evidence of Change Near the Arctic Circle contributed by Lynne Zajac Beck, Arvada, Colorado Lesson #60a “GRACE Description” (Word File) and Lesson #60b “GRACE Lesson: Water Storage Around the World” (Word File), contributed by Margaret Baguio, Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Texas Space Grant Consortium in Austin, Texas; and, by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) outreach team. Keep checking the website for updates to the lesson collection! *2) New Search Tool on the Lessons page *A new lesson plan search option has been added on the lessons page (http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov/lessons.html). The 'Search by Data Category' was added to assist educators and others in locating lesson plans that use a specific type of data provided by the Live Access Server (LAS). Upon selection of an LAS parameter category from the dropdown box, a list of lessons and their purposes will be displayed. Let us know if this new search helps you more easily find lessons for use in your classroom. *3) New data * If you are looking for new and improved Atmospheric Radiation data, check the new CERES Energy Balanced and Filled (EBAF) datasets which replaced the CERES TERRA data in both the Advanced and Armstrong LAS versions. The new EBAF data provides monthly mean top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative fluxes constrained such that the 5-year average global net TOA flux is consistent with the CERES Science Teams' best estimate of heat storage in the Earth-atmosphere system. The team used information from a number of independent measurement sources to create this dataset. It covers the period from March 2000 through October 2005. *4) NSTA in Portland, OR* Are you planning to attend the NSTA regional conference in Portland, OR? MY NASA DATA and S’COOL will be there! Denise Thompson and Jodie Harnden, MY NASA DATA workshop alumni and ambassadors, will represent our team at the conference. Here are the times/locations: “Teaching Earth Science Topics with MY NASA DATA”, Friday, November 21, 8:00-9:00AM, Hilton Portland and Executive Tower, Broadway I/II rooms (Denise Thompson) NESTA Share-a-thon (materials from both projects), Friday, November 21, 9:30-10:30AM, Oregon Convention Center, Oregon Ballroom 201 (Jodie Harnden) “S’COOL is Cool”, Saturday, November 22, 9:30-10:30AM, Doubletree Lloyd Center, Idaho room (Denise Thompson) *5) New Science Project Ideas! *Three new and very interesting project ideas have been added to the Science Projects Page: Solar Garden http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov/P15.html Measuring Temperature Islands http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov/P16.html Measuring Sunlight http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov/P17.html If your students complete a research project using any of the microsets from MY NASA DATA, please let us know!
