MY NASA DATA E-note (Number 12) July 2007 Greetings MY NASA DATA Alumni and Newslist members! The monthly E-note is sent to anyone who is interested in learning more about or keeping up to date with the MY NASA DATA project. If you know someone who is interested in this information, the sign-up can be found at: http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/HPDOCS/email_registration.html 1) New Lessons (Units, Activities, or Science Projects) posted Another great Unit Lesson has been added to the Teacher Plans collection: Lesson #49 "Using Atmospheric Data Sets in the Classroom: Investigating Ozone, Aerosols, and Clouds" by Diana Soehl. http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov/unit_lessons.html 2) More current data for classroom use "Total Column Ozone" data from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) has been added to the Live Access Server (LAS). OMI continues the total ozone measurements that the LAS serves from data gathered by the ISCCP instrument. OMI "Total Column Ozone" data covers the time period from 10/2004 to 03/2007 while the ISCCP total column ozone data covers 01/1994 to 06/2005. OMI ozone data is found under Air Quality in the Atmosphere section of the LAS. A "Monthly Wind Speed - Climatology 1995 to 2005" data set has been included in the LAS under the Oceans datasets. As the title implies, the data is the monthly average of Wind Speed data over a ten-year period. The wind speeds were generated by blending observations from multiple satellites on a global 0.25-degree grid. 3) Item of Interest from the GLOBE program e-mail A new project, "Earth: A Graphic Look at the State of the World is now available for downloading. (No shipping, no plastic!) http://www.theglobaleducationproject.org/earth/earth_presentation.php "EARTH" is an integrated collection of over 110 colorful charts and maps (all viewable on the website) which make obvious the connections between apparently disparate topics - core statistics on forests, soil, fresh water and ocean fisheries are side by side with the numbers on climate change, carbon dioxide emissions, wealth and power, food supply and oil supply, military budgets, population density, health, poverty, access to clean water and life expectancy. The Global Education Project staff made numerous public presentations of "Earth" in 2005 and 2006. We experienced the motivating synergy that can happen when people reach a collective awareness and have the opportunity to talk, question and share. This experience is now available to anyone who can click their way through Power Point. Also included in the presentation are PDF's of each of the 110 slides. These can be passed around or emailed, and have been linked to an index that will help you find each one either by slide sequence or topic; a great way to share information or develop curriculum or conference materials. I hope you have a moment to read more about the Earth Presentation and consider how this resource could be useful in your efforts.
