Greetings MY NASA DATA Alumni and Newslist members! The monthly E-note is sent to anyone who is interested in learning more about or keeping up to date with the MY NASA DATA project. If you know someone who is interested in this information, the sign-up can be found at: http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/HPDOCS/email_registration.html Special Note!! Our e-mail address is changing! To contact the MY NASA DATA team, please use mynasadata@lists.nasa.gov. 1) Surface Elevation data is now available in the LAS 2) More new lessons from the 2007 summer workshop 3) Virginia Standards of Learning search tool on the Lessons Page 4) NSTA regional conference in Birmingham, AL 5) Professional development opportunity from UCAR 6) Competition opportunity--IGES Thacher Scholars Award 1) Surface Elevation data is now available in the LAS The Surface and Atmospheric Radiation Budget (SARB) working group, part of NASA Langley Research Center's Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) mission, provided Surface Elevation data in meters for each 1.0 degree equal angle grid box. Surface elevation data could be used to overlay other Live Access Server (LAS) data to compare elevation with other LAS parameters. 2) More new lesson additions from the 2007 summer workshop Three more exciting new lessons, contributed by the 2007 workshop alumni, have been added to the Lessons Page: #33: Comparing Temperature and Solar Radiation for Common Latitudes contributed by Ken Mattingly, Mount Vernon, Kentucky #34: Ocean Impacts of an El Nino Event contributed by Missy Holzer, Chatham, New Jersey #35: Studying Snow and Ice Changes contributed by Martin F. Schmidt, Jr., Owings Mills, MD Once again, when you try the lessons with your classes, let us know how it goes. Suggestions are always welcome! 3) Virginia Standards of Learning search tool now available on the Lessons Page In addition to the general lesson search tool, there is now a specialized search tool available for the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). A link to the SOL search tool is located above the category buttons on the Lessons Page. 4) NSTA regional conference in Birmingham, AL MY NASA DATA will be presented at the Birmingham regional NSTA, December 7-8, 2007. Summer workshop 2004 alumnus and ambassador, Carole Mashburn, will present MY NASA DATA and S’COOL sessions and will participate in the NESTA share-a-thon. December 7, 9:30-10:30 Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, North Meeting Room H (MY NASA DATA presentation) December 8, 9:30-10:30 Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, North Meeting Room H (S’COOL presentation) December 7, 11:00-12:00 Sheraton Birmingham Hotel, Medical Forum G (NESTA Share-a-thon). 5) Professional development opportunity from UCAR “Are you seeking a K-12 professional development opportunity that will enhance your qualifications, competency, and self-confidence in integrating Earth system science, climate, and global change your science classroom? The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), offers a suite of distance learning courses that build upon our face-to-face professional development workshops.” Please visit http://ecourses.ncar.ucar.edu/ for additional information 6) Competition opportunity--IGES Thacher Scholars Award In an effort to engage the next generation of Earth scientists, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) is now accepting entries for the 2008 Thacher Scholars Award, to be given to secondary school students (grades 9-12) demonstrating the best use of geospatial technologies or data to study Earth. Eligible geospatial tools and data include satellite remote sensing, aerial photography, geographic information systems (GIS), and Global Positioning System (GPS). The main focus of the project must be on the application of the geospatial tool(s) or data to study a problem related to the Earth's environment.
