MY NASA DATA E-note (Number 34) August/September 2009 Greetings MY NASA DATA Alumni and Newslist members! The monthly E-note is sent to anyone who is interested in learning more about or keeping up to date with the MY NASA DATA project. If you know someone who is interested in this information, the sign-up can be found at: http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/HPDOCS/email_registration.html 1) Sea Surface Temperature and Atlantic Hurricanes 2) New item on the Tools page 3) MY NASA DATA on Facebook and YouTube! 4) Earth Science Week 2009 5) Summer Workshop Alumnus is new Teacher in Space! 6) Ambassador presentation 1) Sea Surface Temperature and Atlantic Hurricanes Have you noticed the new hurricane image on the MY NASA DATA front page (http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov/index.html)? Click on the image located above the red "Citizen Scientist" link, then scroll through the sequence showing Hurricane Bertha (2008) and great information about hurricanes. Our teacher-participants have reported that the MY NASA DATA lessons about hurricanes are a great way to start the school year in their science classes. Students can explore, for example, the connection between sea surface temperature and hurricane formation, in Team Lessons H and H1, "Hurricanes as Heat Engines" (teacher-directed and inquiry versions), or in Teacher Lesson 22, "Sea Surface Trends of the Gulf Stream". As you plan your curriculum, take a few minutes to visit the Lessons Page at http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov/lessons.html. The Search features allow you to locate the MY NASA DATA materials by topic or by science standard. You may also provide us with feedback by using the Teacher Feedback button available on each lesson page. 2) New item on the Tools page By popular request, a new "tool" has been added to the MY NASA DATA Computer Tools list at http://reason-dev.larc.nasa.gov/tools.html. Click on the link to "Creating PDF's from MY NASA DATA Lessons" to learn how to make your own "free-of-charge" pdf files of the MY NASA DATA lessons! 3) MY NASA DATA on Facebook and YouTube! MY NASA DATA is now on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/search/?q=my+nasa+data&init=quick#/ (cont'd next ln) pages/MY-NASA-DATA/100917586394?ref=search&sid=807505463.3701746446..1 Simply enter MY NASA DATA in the search bar on Facebook and become a fan. With this new tool, all the fans will be able to see posting of any new materials (lessons, links, video and more!). There is also an ever-evolving photo section that is updated on a regular basis. These pictures are accompanied by plenty of useful information that pertains to the picture. MY NASA DATA is also making use of YouTube! On the MY NASA DATA YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/MyNASAData), you will be able to find a growing number of useful video clips. These video clips include a tutorial on using the MY NASA DATA web site along with the Live Access Server (LAS) that is used in almost all of the lessons. This whole tutorial can be found under the playlists section. All of the other videos can be found under the "Uploads" tab. The MY NASA DATA web site will soon have a section on how to download YouTube videos, so that you will be able to utilize the video without the use of the Internet. 4) Earth Science Week 2009 Earth Science Week 2009, sponsored by the American Geological Institute (AGI), will be observed October 11-17, 2009. The theme of this year's ESW is "Understanding Climate". For more information and to order your ESW Toolkit, visit http://www.earthsciweek.org/ 5) Summer Workshop Alumnus is new Teacher in Space! Jim Kuhl, a MY NASA DATA Summer Workshop alumnus from New York, has been appointed as a Teacher in Space! To read about Jim, as well as Rachel Manzer, another educator who has worked with us through the Digital Learning Network, visit the Langley Researcher News at http://www.nasa.gov/centers/langley/news/researchernews/rn_teachersinspace.html. Congratulations, Jim! 6) Ambassador presentation Missy Holzer, MY NASA DATA Workshop alumna from New Jersey, shared MY NASA DATA activities with 26 educators at a one-week air quality workshop, hosted by Northern Iowa University. If you plan to present MY NASA DATA (and/or S'COOL) at an upcoming in-service session or professional conference, please let us know. We would be happy to provide (within our resources) flyers, bookmarks, and brochures for your presentation.
