*MY NASA DATA E-note (Number 21) April 2008* */Greetings MY NASA DATA Alumni and Newslist members!/* The monthly E-note is sent to anyone who is interested in learning more about or keeping up to date with the MY NASA DATA project. If you know someone who is interested in this information, the sign-up can be found at: http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/HPDOCS/email_registration.html *1) Another great lesson! 2) MY NASA DATA Summer Workshop 2008 3) Toyota Tapestry Awardee! 4) Earth Day 2008 and a special local EarthFest event!* *1) Another great lesson!* Another interesting lesson contributed by the Summer Workshop 2007 participants has been added to the Teacher Plans section of the Lessons page: /#44: Think GREEN - Utilizing Renewable Solar Energy/, contributed by Cindy Henry, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma When you use any of the MY NASA DATA lessons, _please send us your comments_! *2) MY NASA DATA Summer Workshop 2008* *Postmark deadline is April 9th!* The workshop will be held at NASA Langley Research Center, June 22-27. To read the full announcement and application, please visit the website http://mynasadata.larc.nasa.gov and click on the link, Workshop Information and Application. If you have questions, please contact Susan Moore (susan.w.moore@nasa.gov) *3) Toyota Tapestry Awardee!* At this year’s NSTA-Boston national conference, Kenneth Huff, MY NASA DATA Summer Workshop 2007 alumnus from Williamsville, NY, was named a Toyota Tapestry Grant Awardee! Kenneth, along with his colleagues and students will implement the project entitled, “Students Synthesizing Snow-data in Natural Objective Ways (SSSNOW)”. “In the atmosphere or on the ground, snow provides students with unique opportunities to discover winter weather patterns. The Students Synthesizing Snow-data in Natural Objective Ways (SSSNOW) project will provide a vehicle for students to study the physical properties of snow and the characteristics that contribute to the crystalline formation. Using data collection and analysis tools such as a Thermochron and density tubes, students will discover snow data patterns. The SSSNOW project will make science and discovery "cool" so students will want to know more about the snow that is a predominant part of their every day lives and their community identity.” (http://www.nsta.org/pd/tapestry/thisyears.htm) Kenneth and fellow workshop alumnus, Dwight Sieggreen, contributed MY NASA DATA Lesson #31: Great Lakes Snow Analysis Collaborative Network, which includes using a Thermochron (http://learners.gsfc.nasa.gov/mediaviewer/thermochron/) as an extension activity. Congratulations, Kenneth!! *4) Earth Day 2008 and a special local EarthFest event!* Earth Day 2008 will be observed on April 22, 2008. First observed in 1970, Earth Day has become a day of celebration of our Home Planet and how to take care of Earth for the future. For all the latest news and links, and information about becoming a part of the Earth Day Network, please visit http://ww2.earthday.net/. For those of you who are local to the NASA Langley Research Center, we want to invite you to a special Earth Day event! NASA LaRC and the Christopher Newport University Institute for Science Education are sponsoring “EarthFest” on Saturday, April 26, 2008, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm at CNU’s Ferguson Center for the Arts located in Newport News, VA. There will be children's activities, educational activities, "ask-a-scientists" talks, panel discussions, exhibitors showcasing "earth-friendly" products and information, and much, much more.
